STARLEE KINE MYSTERY SERIES

RMCAD faculty, staff, and students joined the VASD Program and Starlee Kine for a casual Q+A session over lunch. The artist will also be participating in the following event with the RMCAD community: We covered a range of subjects, including structural design, withholding information, backstory, the balance of emotional and physical beats, and more. RMCAD students had free access to this workshop. In this workshop co-presented with Lighthouse Writers Workshop, writers of fiction and nonfiction alike joined Starlee Kine for a discussion on the art of suspense and momentum. Kine wss the fifth and final presenter in the VASD Program’s yearlong Senseslecture series. She has been interviewed by Vice and Vanity Fair, and appeared on Conan with Jake Gyllenhaal, tape measure in hand, to confirm the case was closed. Her writing has been featured in The New York Times and her true stories about almost joining a cult and waiting for artist Marina Abramović were told at the live storytelling event The Moth. The show tackled (and solved) such age old mysteries as: ‘How Tall is Jake Gyllenhaal?’ and ‘Why is Britney Spears Carrying My Book?’ Kine is also a former producer and longtime contributor to the public radio program This American Life. She is the creator and host of the podcast Mystery Show, which was named best podcast of 2015 by iTunes. Starlee Kine is a writer and public radio producer. Similar to her ability to pull a listener into an intimate, revelatory exchange, Kine’s lecture compelled the audience to reflect on our own sincere conversations, mysteries, and desires for solutions when so many of our truths are unknown until spoken, when so much of life seems uncertain, and when that same uncertainty propels us forward.

In her Senses series lecture Kine illuminated how the element of surprise is an essential component of telling a story and why the medium of radio and podcasts offer up such a rich narrative experience.

Whether conversing with a Ticketmaster customer service representative about self-doubt or commiserating over heartbreak with Phil Collins -Kine transforms audio into visually vivid stories that reveal the pitfalls and triumphs of curiosity, discovery, and human universality. Starlee Kine’s mystery-solving skills are more akin to Columbo than Sherlock Holmes as they originate in human connection and intimate conversation. Some of it derives from Starlee’s unique voice and personality, but she is putting on a master class in how to get her audience to take interest in even the smallest of things. Instead, this is meant to highlight an example of exceptional communication and storytelling. This post isn’t about how a specific episode ties in with an upcoming lectionary passage. Whether or not Britney Spears likes a book by an obscure author.Other things you will come to care about: The crazy thing about Mystery Show is that you’re probably thinking: who cares about some random lady and some random store from back when we used VHS tapes? But I can almost promise you that if you listen, you will care.

For example, in the pilot episode a woman remembers joining a video rental store, checking out a tape, and coming back the next day only to find the store had gone out of business overnight. Each week, Starlee tackles a mystery that cannot be solved simply through the internet.
